Leeds-based fusion quintet Yaatri’s debut single 'Waiting on the Sun' is set to release on the 12th of October 2019, to coincide with their appearance at Marsden Jazz Festival.
Assembled by guitarist and composer Liam DeTar, Yaatri consists of Bethany Herrington on vocals, Felix Bertulis-Webb on keyboard, Jona Tromp on drums and Joe Wilkes on bass. Less than a year since forming, Yaatri have already been successful in securing places in Manchester Jazz Festival’s Hothouse, the Jazz North Introduces scheme and Leeds College of Music’s Artist Development Program. They have performed at the Sounds Like THIS Festival, JazzLeeds Festival, Band On The Wall Jazz Showcase, and supported UK jazz legend Tony Kofi.
Influenced by the emotive style of Scandinavian jazz, the group blend open sonic spheres with complex compositions to create their unique sound.
'Waiting on the Sun' is from their forthcoming EP, which be released in early 2020. The single is an exploration of guitarist and composer Liam DeTar’s cultural duality, with the piece fusing melodic ideas from Indian Classical music with western harmony over an open and dreamy soundscape.
Recorded at the Nave studios in Leeds in March of 2019, the single was built around a raw and energetic live performance, transported to a celestial realm through the use of synthesizers, effected guitars, tape delays and improvised backing vocals. The single also features Zuheb Ahmed Khan, one of India’s most respected young tabla players, and was recorded at Island City Studios in Mumbai.
This existential and explorative work is a fine debut from the quintet and hints towards a fruitful and bright future.
'Waiting on the Sun' will be released on October 12th 2019.
