Soul Rebels Sessions 7th Birthday: Preview

This Saturday (the 5th of October), Soul Rebel Sessions will be celebrating it's 7th birthday at The Wardrobe Leeds in sublime style, with TC and The Groove Family headlining, and they will be supported by the emerging London-based band PYJÆN and rising stars The Space Antics.

Since starting in 2012, Soul Rebel Sessions has hosted a whole host of legendary names including the likes of Jose James, Nubiyan Twist, The Abstract Orchestra, Ezra Collective, Kokoroko, Keyon Harrold, Yussef Kamaal and many more! You can find out more about Soul Rebel Sessions creator and collator - DJ Lubi - in his 2018 interview with Ally here:

The headliners are Leeds global beats and fusion jazz collective TC and The Groove Family, who are led by Necktr drummer Tim Cook. Featuring musicians from some of the best bands in the city's underground music scene (Necktr, Project Hilts, Long Legged Creatures, Fall Quintet), TC and The Groove Family can have anything from 10 to 16 musicians on stage when the core band are joined by guest vocalists, MCs and instrumentalists. Within no time at all, the group have provided support to high profile jazz figures like Yussef Dayes, KOG & The Zongo Brigade and Cykada to now headlining at The Wardrobe. The group will be releasing their debut single for the event.

London-based group PYJÆN will also be part of the celebrations, after a summer of hitting up the major festivals including Glastonbury, Love Supreme and Brainchild. PYJÆN represent the next wave of London young jazz rebels following in the footsteps of Moses Boyd, Theon Cross, Nubya Garcia and Joe Armon Jones. The 5-piece group includes Ezra Collective trumpeter Dylan Jones, and the group have recently released their debut self-titled record. Their quasi-experimental style mixes more traditional fusion jazz with elements of funk and afrobeat to create a tantalising and hypnotic sound.

The night will be opened by one of the latest Leeds College Of Music rising stars of neo-soul and hip-hop jazz, The Space Antics. Having previously played at shows at RE:SOUL, The Wardrobe and Hifi Club, the group are definitely ones to watch for the future. Soul Rebels DJs Lubi Jovanovic and Chris Welch plus special guest DJ NikNak hold it down on the decks as always with a mix of past, present and future jazz, deep soul, afro sounds, Latin beats, left-field hip-hop, Brazilian grooves and soulful electronica.

For 7 years, DJ Lubi has provided the city of Leeds with world-class jazz talent - here's to many years more!
